Daniel Frank Sedwick Announces Treasure, World and U.S. Coin Auction #15

Daniel Frank Sedwick, LLC proudly announces their Treasure, World and U.S. Coin Auction #15, taking place live on the Internet in four sessions, May 1-2, 2014. The total pre-auction low estimate for 1613 lots exceeds $1.2 million.

“This auction is packed with trophies but also features many great wholesale opportunities,” says Daniel Sedwick. “We anticipate eager participation from collectors and dealers alike.”

Cobs and shipwreck coins dominate, as usual. Among the highlights in gold are many choice 8-escudos cobs from the 1715 Fleet, including a Mexican 1 escudo Royal 1714J, a Lima 8 escudos 1701H Philip V and the finest-known Cuzco 2 escudos 1698M. Shipwreck ingots on offer include a boldly marked “EN RADA” gold bar from the “Dry Tortugas wreck,” which was recently identified as the Rosario of the famous 1622 Fleet (Atocha and Santa Margarita), in addition to other ingots in gold, silver and copper from several different wrecks around the world.

“As usual our shipwreck silver coin offerings are second-to-none,” explains Agustin “Augi” Garcia-Barneche. “This particular auction features several very rare Cartagena, Colombia, cobs from the Atocha (1622), plus many 1652 transitionals of Potosí from the Capitana (1654).”

treasure1Round presentation pieces known as “Royals” from the mint of Lima, Peru, are prominent in this auction as well, with two 8 reales and one 4 reales—all very rare. From the mint of Potosí, Bolivia, come several more Royals in addition to an even-rarer type of 8-reales presentation known as a “Heart,” as well as a very rare assayer-Rincón 8 reales, the highly sought “first dollar” of the mint. Silver cobs from the rare mints of Santo Domingo, Panama and Colombia also abound in this auction.

Two big trophies in Latin American coins stand out: a Santiago, Chile, bust 8 reales 1796DA with classic “CRAROLVS” error and the finest known Popayán, Colombia, 5 décimos 1869. For the first time Sedwick presents a quantity of certified German States coins as well.

“Dealer bidders should watch for wholesale-level group lots this time,” says Sedwick, “including a 10kg lot of silver cobs from the São José wreck of 1622—over 500 coins!”

The most eye-catching items in the auction, however, are the shipwreck artifact trophies, commanded by a 5-carat (t.w.) diamond ring from the 1715 Fleet and a silver cup from the 1715 Fleet, plus a beautiful bronze swivel cannon from the Cazador of 1784.

Says Garcia: “There is clearly something for every kind of buyer in this auction. We look forward to helping bidders get the lots they want. We wish everyone the best of luck!”
