The United States Mint recently revealed design candidates for the 2018, 2019 and 2020 American Eagle Platinum Proof coin program. Tomorrow morning, on September 16, the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) will review the packet of 36 obverse and 10 reverse designs and discuss the relative merits of each. As part of its advisory function, the CCAC will then send its recommendations to the Secretary of the Treasury for his consideration.
The theme for the 2018-2020 American Platinum Eagle Proof coin series is “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness”, one of the most famous phrases from the Declaration of Independence. As written by Thomas Jefferson and revised by the Second Continental Congress, the phrase refers to three of the “unalienable rights”–rights that can never be freely or forcibly given, traded or taken away–that the Creator has given to mankind by his very creation. The Declaration of Independence, adopted and signed on July 4, 1776, states that it is the fundamental job of government to protect these rights.
Designs for the year 2018 symbolize “Life”; coins dated 2019 are meant to portray the concept of “Liberty”; and 2020 is reserved for the embodiment of the “Pursuit of Happiness”. Candidate designs are bundled in groups of three, to be considered as unified three-coin sets. Some of the sets include a companion reverse. The CCAC is free to mix and match designs, however.
The American Eagle Platinum Proof coin debuted in 1997, the same year as the bullion version.
