Watch: The American Numismatic Association’s Future of Numismatics Symposium

On January 7, 2019, at the Winter Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Show, the American Numismatic Association (ANA) held a symposium that brought together thought leaders from the past and present to discuss the future of the coin hobby. Together, they discussed the future of digital media in the coin hobby, what goes into putting together a successful coin convention, how the industry can nurture the next generation of dealers, and what lessons today’s hobby can learn from the past.

The Speakers:

  • Gary Adkins: ANA President
  • Q. David Bowers: Author, and Co-Founder of Stack’s Bowers Galleries
  • Charles Morgan: Author, and Editor of CoinWeek
  • Rob Oberth: Coin Dealer and Founder of Coin Dealers Helping Coin Dealers
  • Cindy Wibker: Convention Coordinator, Florida United Numismatists

In this video, you will find a number of interesting and important observations about the state of the hobby and things that collectors, dealers, and other professionals can and should do to grow the hobby in the 21st century.

It was a lively and interesting conversation starter that covers issues that undoubtedly will be discussed again and again over the course of the coming years.

  1. I too started in the 60’s, and I concur that there are no more local coin shops. The closest was 40 miles away and they shut their doors in 2018, they could compete with the internet with the overhead required to run the store. Sad Days Indeed
Numismatics has also changed with the inclusion of Bullion and the new “Stacker” and “Flipper” with YouTube being the education source to the masses. But YouTube is more inline with the Stacker and Bullion and not so much appreciation for “Collectors”.
I recently let my ANA membership go, and recently have been considering leaving YouTube and have made my videos private. I wish there was a place for Collectors, maybe the ANA can create an online experience like YouTube but for the Collector. Make the ANA web site the place to be for a greater numismatic experience, with greater access to dealers who are members of the ANA.
    Thank You
