About the Collection
James A. Stack, Sr. began assembling his collection in the late 1930s, driven by an ambitious but clear vision: to build the most complete and refined cabinet of United States coinage he could achieve. Over years of disciplined pursuit, he secured pieces of remarkable rarity, condition, and historical importance.
His name, while less publicly celebrated than some of his contemporaries, became synonymous among specialists with an uncompromising eye for quality.
Following Stack’s passing in 1951, his children safeguarded the collection under explicit instruction to keep it intact until the youngest grandchild reached adulthood.
As a result, the assemblage remained unseen for nearly a quarter-century, finally returning to the market through a series of landmark Stack’s sales beginning in 1975.
Those auctions helped define a generation of collecting and established the Stack pedigree as one of enduring prestige.
Upcoming Sales
Now, the next chapter begins. The 2025 and 2026 offerings, more than 200 coins valued at roughly $20 million, including multiple pieces individually surpassing the million-dollar mark, represent one of the last great untouched reservoirs of elite U.S. coinage.
Additiionally, from early federal gold and silver to rare Territorial issues and top-population examples, these sessions embody the discerning connoisseurship that shaped Stack’s lifelong pursuit.
Finally, Collectors seeking once-in-a-generation opportunities will find them here, and the countdown to December has already begun.
Coin collecting would really be different today without coin collecting titans like James Stacks Sr. What his collection of rare American gems has done to inspire countless numbers of coin collecting enthusiasts, both young and old, cannot be understated.
