South African paper money highlights of Stack's Bowers Galleries May 2018 Collectors Choice Online Auction

In our May Collectors Choice Sale closing live at StacksBowers.com on May 16, are featured two important pieces of paper money from South Africa.

Lot 72357 is a Pick 39, South Africa Treasury 1 Pond, with an 1872 date, in a PCGS 62 holder. Not many issued notes are known, and we have not handled any like this one. This medium-large sized, green colored piece is in excellent condition for the type. It has black arms at center, handwritten signatures and partial handwritten date.

Lot 72358 is another of the highlights of our May Collectors Choice Online Auction. This Nationale Bank Pick 48a 1 Pond from 1899 is in a PCGS VF 25 holder. This important piece is the first of the type we have handled, and there are none on the PMG population report. This extremely rare note is free of any net comments, and displays excellent detail overall, especially for the grade. Manuscript signatures and a partially handwritten date of 1899 can be observed in the appropriate panels. President Paul Kruger is pictured at left. A watermark of the bank name can be seen when the note is held against the light. It carries an estimate of $6,000 to $7,000.
