An 1870-S silver dollar, one of only nine confirmed examples, takes center stage as Heritage presents an auction of rare US coins at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York October 31 through November 2. The premier session, featuring the finest coins in this auction is scheduled for October 31 at 6PM ET.
The 1870-S dollar is a major rarity in the Seated dollar series, and is also one of the premier rarities in 19th century numismatics. It is seldom available in any condition. The US Mint did not record production of any 1870-S silver dollars, and a century ago this coin was believed unique. Today only nine examples can be definitively traced, and only twelve are believed to have been produced. The NGC-graded XF40 coin we are offering falls roughly in the middle of the known examples in terms of quality.
From The Cherny collection comes an outstanding selection of rare Saint-Gaudens double eagles, headed by the gem 1920-S piece detailed in the next section. This collection featured numerous other rarities, including a 1921 coin in MS62 as well as coins dated 1927-S, 1929, 1930-S, 1931 (one of two examples of this date we are offering in this auction), 1931-D and 1932, all graded MS64 or higher. Saint-Gaudens double eagle specialists looking to fill the final hole in their collections should look closely at these offerings.
