Admiral Collection Ten Dollar Gold Highlights Heritage Auction Long Beach

The Admiral Collection, one of the finest early eagle and Liberty Head ten dollar gold collections ever assembled and featuring coins long off the market, provided most of the fireworks as Heritage’s Long Beach Signature Auction soared to outstanding results. This auction, originally scheduled for February 22-26, but extended to February 27 due to technical difficulties, is expected to clear $20 million overall. All prices include a 20% Buyer’s Premium.

The top 10 Dollar gold coin in this auction was an 1875 eagle, graded AU50 by NGC. With a mere 100 examples of this coin struck, this issue justifiably claims the status of the key to the Liberty Eagle series. With none of the survivors reaching Mint State status, this highly desirable example reached the impressive final price of $372,000.

A 1842-O eagle, the sole finest survivor of the date at a PCGS-graded MS63, claimed a final price of $288,000. Only a handful of Mint State survivors exist of this issue, merely the second New Orleans eagle date.

Another finest-known New Orleans Mint coin, the Eliasberg 1897-O coin, retrieved $264,000 from an eager bidder. This PCGS-graded Superb gem was described by noted branch mint gold specialist Doug Winter as “nearly flawless.” Overall, 10 of the top 14 coins to sell in this auction were eagles, and nine of those were from the Admiral Collection.

Among coins with a face value of something other than 10 dollars, the highest result belonged to a 1794 dollar graded VF35 by PCGS. 1794 dollars are immensely popular as the US Mint’s first issue of the denomination, and this one, unusually for the date, features a sharp strike. It brought $303,000.
