The Central Bank of Portugal (Banco de Portugal) will issue a cupronickel-alloy collector coin into circulation on 8 June 2016. Entitled ‘Cante Alentejano’, the coin will have a face value of €2.5 and commemorate the listing of this variety of polyphonic singing as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
The coin will be distributed to the public through credit institutions and the Bank of Portugal’s cash offices.
The ‘Cante Alentejano’ coin is legal tender only in Portugal and has the following features:
On the obverse
- Three male figures representing Alentejo singers;
- On the right side, the Portuguese coat of arms, the face value and the words ‘Portugal’ and ‘2016’.
On the reverse
- Four faces of Alentejo harvesters, symbolising the women’s choirs associated with working in the fields;
- On the right side, the words ‘Património Imaterial da Humanidade UNESCO’ (UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
The characteristics of this coin were approved by Executive Order No 64-B/2016, published in the Official Gazette, Series I – No 63 of 31 March. The issue limit was set at 75,000 coins with normal finish.
