No holiday captures the imagination of children more than Christmas. From the coming together of family and friends, to the bright pageantry of Christmas lights, and of course a copious bounty of new toys and games, Christmas evokes so many feelings for the young and the old.
To honor the inner child in all of us, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued a holiday-themed coin for the 2015 Christmas Season. Titled “Holiday Toy Box”, this cupronickel coin is the ninth coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s annual holiday coin series. Each coin in the series features a 3D lenticular design. Holiday Toy Box is legal tender of Canada and carries a face value of 50 cents. Issue price for the coin is $29.95 CAD.
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. The queen faces to the left, as is the tradition. The inscription reads ELIZABETH II D ∙ G ∙ REGINA. The effigy is struck in a brilliant finish. The field exhibits granular striations.
Joel Kimmel’s full-color illustration depicts a child’s bedroom. Underneath the window, a toy box, which depending on the angle of the viewer is either closed or open and bursting with toys. A basketball, a bear with a blue ribbon on its head, a toy train, and a Raggedy Anne doll burst out of the toy box. To the right, a red rocking horse. To the left, an acoustic guitar and a rabbit wearing a red stocking cap and scarf; an unopened present rests against his right leg. A toy robot walks to the edge of a green carpet. To its right, another present left unopened and a spinning top. In the foreground is a purple toy car and a pile of lettered blocks. Through the window in the back of the room, a snowy winter scene appears. A globe sits on the window sill and a red and white airplane flies through the air.
