CoinWeek Coin Designer’s Profile: Percy Metcalfe

English coin designer Percy Metcalfe (1895-1970) studied art and sculpture before volunteering for military service at the outset of World War I. Despite sustaining a serious injury during his service, Metcalfe resumed his career as an artist. His work began to receive national acclaim in early 1920s. His harp design bested a stiff competition to redesign Irish coinage in 1928. Other commissions flowed from that. In 1927, Metcalfe designed a commemorative medal to honor Egyptian King Fuad. This design went on to feature on Egyptian coins from 1929 to 1933. Metcalfe then followed that design with an effigy of King Farouk. Metcalfe designed coinage for Fiji and for the 1935 British Crown.

His Irish harp design continues to serve as the obverse design of the coinage of Ireland.
