Author Allan Schein has just published an insightful study of American medallic artist Bela Lyon Pratt and the creation of the Bigelow-Pratt $2.50 and $5.00 gold coins.
The coins were a radical departure from all previous U.S. coin designs in that the design was rendered in incuse instead of struck in bas relief.
Allan stops by to talk about Pratt, the coins, and a particular example that sparked his interest in the series.

Is it my imagination or does Bela Lyon Pratt’s image closely resemble a young early 1930’s Bela Lugosi? Same first name too!
