CoinWeek Podcast #98: Our Coin Design Process is Broken – with Gary Marks

The world’s mints create thousands of collector coins each year. Many push the limit of taste and what numismatists have, for hundreds of years, defined as a “coin”.

In the US, however, the same staid process that has culminated in a generation of boring coin design continues apace.

Why is it that the CCAC, the CFA, the Treasury Department, and the United States Mint’s most talented artists combine to create coins that often leave collectors wanting?

Former CCAC Chair Gary Marks returns to the CoinWeek Podcast and provides illuminating commentary on where the process might be going wrong, while CoinWeek editor Charles Morgan tries to put together his thoughts on how to make things better.

  1. Hey Charles,

I’m a HUGE fan of the Ozark Riverways quarter, especially the various implementations of the water on the various versions (circulating, proof, enhanced uncirc.). Yes, some ATB’s are pretty uninspiring, but some are quite nice.
