Description:
Starting in 2012, the Monnaie de Paris introduced a five-year coin program called, “Les Grands Navires Français”. The program celebrates French maritime history and consists of coins honoring French military and civilian vessels, released at a pace of three per year. For the third issue of 2015, the Mint honors the French ocean liner La Gironde. This La Gironde coin carries a face value of 10-euros.
This 1-ounce silver commemorative coin is the third release from the year 2015 and is the twelfth coin in the series. Collectors can also order this design as a 5-ounce silver 50-euro coin or as a 1/4-ounce gold 50-euro coin.
Obverse: The ocean liner, Gironde, seen from her starboard side. To the rear, at above the figure of the ship, is a profile view of the bow. The ship’s name, “GIRONDE”, is inscribed in stylized typography. Inside the “O” is plan of the city of la Plata. Inside the “D” is a graphical representation of the Gironde estuary. Beneath GIRONDE are the letters RI.
Reverse: The coin’s reverse features a design that is found on other coins in the series, specifically, coins that depict French ocean liners. In the coin’s center is the inscription: LES GRANS NAVIRES FRANÇAIS. Above, to the left center, are two smoking funnels. The denomination “10 EURO” appears to the top right. The coin’s lower area depicts a stylized head’s-on view of a ship, with portholes to the right and left of center. In the exergue is the date: 2015.
