The collecting community mourns the passing of George Frederick Kolbe, a leading figure in the world of numismatic literature, who died recently. Known globally as the foremost numismatic bookseller, Kolbe’s dedication and expertise shaped the field for over half a century, leaving an indelible mark on collectors, scholars, and fellow professionals alike.

Kolbe’s journey began modestly in May 1967 with a three-page fixed price list sent to a handful of potential customers. From these humble beginnings, he cultivated his business into Kolbe & Fanning Numismatic Booksellers, the world’s largest independent firm specializing in numismatic literature. His commitment to detail and scholarly rigor was evident in his meticulously crafted catalogs, which evolved from simple lists to comprehensive, bibliographically rigorous publications. His first mail-bid sale in 1976 and subsequent public auction in 1979 marked significant milestones in the expansion of his firm and the professionalization of numismatic literature sales. Over his distinguished career, Kolbe was associated with an astonishing 168 auctions, many of which remain essential references within the field.

Beyond his business acumen, Kolbe was a passionate advocate for numismatic bibliography. He published The Numismatic Bookseller, a versatile publication that served as a house organ, fixed price list, and mail-bid sale. Demonstrating his collaborative spirit and commitment to fostering knowledge, he co-founded the Numismatic Bibliomania Society with his friend Jack Collins. In 2012, Kolbe solidified his legacy further with the publication of The Reference Library of a Numismatic Bookseller, a comprehensive bibliography based on his personal working collection.

His profound influence was recognized through numerous accolades. A Life Fellow of the American Numismatic Society (ANS), Kolbe received the prestigious 2005 Trustees’ Award and was the honoree at the ANS Gala that year. The American Numismatic Association (ANA), where he was a Life Member, bestowed upon him the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019, the Glenn Smedley Memorial Award in 1995, and recognized his award-winning exhibit, “Numismatic Bibliography 1579–1912: The Literature of Numismatic Literature,” at the 2011 ANA World’s Fair of Money. He was also an elected member of the honorary Rittenhouse Society and a founding member of the Attinelli Fellowship, an association for numismatic bibliophiles.

In 2010, Kolbe merged his well-established company with Kolbe & Fanning, ensuring the continuation of his legacy. Even after his retirement in 2023, his guidance and wisdom remained invaluable to the firm that proudly bears his name.

George Kolbe’s passing leaves a significant void in the numismatic world. Yet, his contributions to the study and preservation of numismatic literature, his mentorship to countless individuals, and the enduring firm he built will continue to inspire and inform future generations. He cherished the many friendships forged throughout his career, and his gratitude for the opportunities numismatics provided was a hallmark of his character. While his loss is deeply felt, the richness of his life’s work and the memories he created offer solace to all who knew him.
