Heritage: $16.5 Million Sells in November Dallas Numismatic Auctions

numismatic auction

An original 1861 Confederate half dollar, one of a mere four minted, sold for $960,000, leading the results of the Eric P. Newman Collection Part IX US Coins Signature Auction, held November 1 and 3 at Heritage Auctions’ Dallas headquarters. Over the four day period of November 1-4, three auctions were held, with the Eric P. Newman Collection Part IX US Coins Signature Auction realizing $4.5 million, the Eric P. Newman Collection Part VIII US Currency Signature Auction realizing $2 million, and the Dallas Signature Auction of US coins realizing $10 million. All prices realized include a 20% Buyers’ Premium.

The 1861 Confederate Half Dollar was the only coin officially issued by the Confederacy. Despite having a provenance well-established since 1910, this auction was the first time the coin has ever been offered at public auction. It had been off the market since Mr. Newman acquired it more than seven decades ago. Graded Proof-40 by NGC and carrying the CAC sticker of approval, this is likely the finest specimen available to collectors, as the finest known example is forever enshrined in the collection of the American Numismatic Society.

Additional highlights of this auction include:

The November 1-2 Eric P. Newman Part VIII Currency auction was highlighted by the finest-known Fr.10 1861 $10 St. Louis Demand Note. Eric acquired this note from D. C. Wismer in 1939; like the Confederate half dollar above, the note made its first public auction appearance in this sale. This note merited the PCGS Very Fine 30 grade, by far the finest assigned to any of the four known notes of this type from St. Louis. It realized an impressive $168,000.

Among the other highlights of this auction are:

All items sold in auctions of the Eric P. Newman Collection are from the extensive collection of Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society (a Missouri not-for-profit corporation), which have been assembled over a period of 90 years. Proceeds of the sale of all items will be used exclusively for supplementing the Society’s museum operations and scholarly numismatic research efforts and for the benefit of other not-for-profit institutions selected by Eric P. Newman Numismatic Education Society for public purposes.

The Dallas Signature Auction of US coins, held November 2-4, was paced by a 1900 double eagle graded PR66+ Ultra Cameo by NGC. This coin is the finest known example of this date certified by either of the major grading services in Ultra or Deep Cameo, with a mere three coins graded in higher numerical grades regardless of designation.

Along with the aforementioned double eagle, this auction featured a number of additional highlights including the following:
