NYINC Paper Money Highlights
Welcome to our World Paper Money Sale at the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) for the year 2020. Enclosed within this catalog, you will find many lots that have never been offered at public auction, along with pieces that are the finest of their kind. Even the most advanced collectors will find items in this sale that they have never had the opportunity to purchase before.
Among the earliest highlights in the sale is lot 30013, an unlisted Specimen 100 Pound National Bank of Australasia note graded Choice Uncirculated 64 by PMG.
Notes from the Bahamas comprise one of the most complete sections of the catalog, and perhaps the most exciting item from that country can be found in lot 30034, an unlisted 1965 50 Dollar note with a triple signature variety. Graded About Uncirculated 55 EPQ by PMG, it is the first of its kind that we have offered. The following lot, 30035, is a Gem 1965 100 Dollar note graded 65 EPQ by PMG. It is the finest that we have handled and is one of only five that have received the coveted Gem designation from PMG.
A strong Bermuda section includes a 1920 5 Shillings (P-3a) graded CU 64 by PMG (lot 30067), and an equally impressive 1927 dated 1 Pound (P-5b) graded Gem 65 EPQ by PMG (lot 30070). The Bermuda section also features lot 30071, an immaculate 1964 10 Pound (P-22) note with a low serial number of 109, graded Superb Gem 68 OPQ by PCGS GSG.
Our selection of Canadian currency may be one of our strongest ever, with well over $200,000 in estimated value. In lot 30117, we feature an extremely rare 1884 Bank of British North America 5 Dollar note, one of only seven pieces known. An extraordinary Bank of Ottawa 5 Dollar note, the finest PMG graded example, is presented in lot 30135. Only three are known for the 1900 date, according to the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Bank Notes. Of the three 1900 5 Dollar notes known, two are encapsulated in PMG holders, while the third is held in an institutional collection.
A very high-grade Choice Uncirculated 64 DC-27 5 Dollar in lot 30107 has a starting price of only $26,000 on an estimate of $35,000 to $45,000. An incredible 1935 BC-11 25 Dollar note will be available in lot 30109. This stunning piece is one of only 16 uncirculated examples on the PMG population report.
The Canadian section also features lot 30132, the only PMG-certified Niagara District Bank 1854 5 Dollar note. The Charlton Standard Catalogue lists just one known and that is found in an institutional collection. The note we offer here was first issued as a 1 Dollar and was subsequently raised to 5 Dollars. It is quite rare for the type and is probably among the hardest notes from the bank to find.
The continent of Asia is also well represented in our world paper money sale, with numerous highlights from the region. None stand out more than lot 30368, a very scarce issued 1927 10 Pound note graded Very Fine 25 by PMG. Without question, this is one of the finest examples of the type known in fully issued state, with many of the finer examples having been canceled. A scarce People’s Republic of China 3 Yuan in lot 30164 is certified as Choice Uncirculated 64 by PMG, and should attract significant attention.
Japan is represented in lot 30301 with P-78Cs, a 1000 Yen Specimen graded Gem 65EPQ by PMG.
The coveted South Vietnam 1000 Dong Old Man and the Temple specimen note will be offered in lot 30464. This note is the more popular of the specimen and proof varieties for the 1000 Dong, as it has the serial number and the portrait watermark.
Europe and European colonies are equally well represented in our world paper money sale with highlights from Greenland, such as the 1803 P-A4 1 Rigsdaler in lot 30256, the only example graded by PMG. Lot 30258 offers a Greenland Pick 17Aa 50 Kroner graded About Uncirculated 55 by PMG. A Curacao 1965 25 Gulden is presented in lot 30193 certified About Uncirculated 58 EPQ; it is the finest example graded by PMG.
