Latvia 2015 150 Years of Firefighting in Latvia 5-Euro Silver Coin

The Bank of Latvia has issued a .925 silver 5-euro coin to commemorate 150 years of firefighting in Latvia. Latvia’s first firefighters’ brigade was formed in 1845 in Dinaburg of Vitebsk, today referred to as the city of Daugavpils. Firefighting units emerged in Riga 19 years later, fighting their first fire on May 17, 1865. Soon, firefighting units sprung up one after another in Latvia’s other cities and towns.

Today, Latvia’s professional firefighters are trained to international standards and operate both in the defense of the citizens of Latvia and also in coordination with NATO’s Euro-Atlantic Disaster Response Coordination Centre and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Obverse: A firefighter’s helmet surmounts two crossed firefighter’s axes atop of a shield of flames. To the right and left stand two firefighters. Two crossed oak leaf branches fill the extend to the right and left from the coin’s bottom. At the top of the coin, wrapping around the rim is the semi-circled inscription UGUNSDZĒSĪBAI LATVIJĀ (Firefighting in Latvia). The numeral 150 is located beneath. The date 2015 is located beneath the oak branches.

Reverse: Eight firefighters charge to the scene of a blaze, being pulled by a team of two horses.. Two are standing, blowing horns. A dog races along on the side. The 150-year old firetruck is surrounded by roaring flames. The denomination 5 EURO follows the curvature of the rim at the bottom of the coin.

Edge: The coin’s edge bears the inscriptions: LATVIJAS BANKA and LATVIJAS REPUBLIKA.

Designer(s): This Latvian 5-euro coin was designed on computer by artist Henrihs Vorkals. View Designers Profile. Latvian Mint sculptor/ engraver Ligita Franckeviča created the plaster models.  View Designers Profile
