Latvian Coins Win Prizes at Coin Constellation 2015

By The Latvian Bank….
Not-Intended-for-Circulation Latvian coins have very successfully participated in the 9th International Commemorative (Collector) Coin Contest Coin Constellation 2015.

The winners of the contest were recently announced in Moscow. The national central banks, mints and other coin-issuing entities from 29 countries competed for prizes in nine major categories, presenting 240 collector coins and 23 coin series to the judgement of the international jury.

Coins issued between 1 January and 31 December 2014 were eligible to compete.

The White Book, a collector coin issued by The Latvian Bank (Latvijas Banka) in 2014, emerged as the winner in the Unique Concept category. This silver five-euro collector coin, designed by Sandra Krastiņa and struck by the Royal Dutch Mint (Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt), is dedicated to “The White Book”, a masterpiece created by an outstanding Latvian writer Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš (1877–1962).

The silver five-euro collector coin issued in August 2014 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Baltic Way was ranked second in the category Silver Coin of the Year. The graphic design of the coin is created by Visvaldis Asaris; Ligita Franckeviča is the author of the plaster model. The coin has been struck in the Netherlands by Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt. The coin is a dedication to the peaceful demonstration of 23 August 1989, unique on an international scale, when about 2 million people from Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania joined their hands to form a human chain, which for 15 minutes was spanning over 600 km through the capital cities of Tallinn, Vilnius and Riga.

Coin Constellation is a contest in which Latvia has successfully participated before. The coin 365 was the 2014 winner in the Unique Concept category, whereas the Latvian silver collector coin dedicated to the world-renowned composer Richard Wagner was bestowed the title of World’s Best Silver Coin.

The Coin Constellation Contest is organised by the Russian Publishing House Watermark.
