To celebrate the start of the Chinese New Year, Pobjoy Mint has issued a unique coin which incorporates some of the old Chinese traditions to bring luck. February 8, 2016 sees the start of the Lunar Year of the Monkey, which has been celebrated since 2600 BCE and is based on the cycles of the moon.
The original shape of the coin is what gives its unique appeal as it has been produced in the shape of a Chinese lock charm. This type of charm is based on the traditional Chinese device used to safeguard possessions and property and its main purpose is to protect a person from evil and to bring good luck, fortune, official rank and long life.
The Chinese New Year can fall anywhere between late January and the middle of February where these lock charms are usually presented to family and loved ones and placed under pillows at the time of the Lunar New Year.
Available in Bronze and Fine 1oz Silver, both metals are available in a beautiful proof finish. The Silver version is available with the cherry blossom highlighted in a stunning coloured finish. Each precious metal coin is struck four times to create the famous Pobjoy ‘proof’ finish. To view this and other coins in the range, please visit our website, www.pobjoy.com.
The design on the coin shows an intrepid monkey walking along a branch surrounded by cherry blossom, which is considered one of the most popular flowers as a symbol of good luck. The obverse of each coin features the new effigy design of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.
The bronze lock coin is shipped in a traditional lycee pack (money gift pack) traditionally given as gifts during Lunar New Year. Each pack is accompanied by an 800mm red ribbon which can be threaded through the coin. Each silver coin is encapsulated in an acrylic capsule for protection and housed in a stunning red box. It also has an 800mm red ribbon.
Orders for the Lunar Monkey Lock Charm coins have been taken since November 25. Uncirculated bronze coins will begin shipping on December 16, while the silver coin will begin shipping on December 10. Please be aware of the Pobjoy Mint’s Christmas closure from December 24 until January 5, 2016.
