National Money Show and World’s Fair of Money Offer ANA Experience

By Charles Morgan for CoinWeek …..
I’ve often written that American Numismatic Association (ANA) coin shows offer collectors a unique and valuable experience.

Presently the ANA conducts two shows a year: the big show, which takes place in the summer is called the World’s Fair of Money. It’s fair to say that this show is the World Series of American Numismatics.

The winter show, which is going on right now–March 9-11–is called the National Money Show. The smaller of the two coin shows, the National Money Show has brought the ANA experience to Atlanta, Portland and Dallas in recent years. This year, the ANA lights down in the heart of FUN territory: Orlando, Florida.

Combining high-quality educational programs with a bourse floor that draws many of the American market’s most established dealers, the National Money Show is worth a day trip. The many attractions in the city and surrounding areas will surely entice you to extend your stay.

Of course, we’re here for the coins.

Here’s a quick run-down of what’s happening Friday and Saturday:

Rick Montgomery & Mark Salzberg

On Friday night, the ANA will host a special dinner and conversation with Numismatic Guaranty Corporation’s (NGC) Rick Montgomery and Mark Salzberg. NGC is the official grading service of the American Numismatic Association and this special event will allow ANA members who have registered to attend the opportunity to gain valuable insights from two men who have lifetimes of leadership and experience in the rare coin business.

Kagin’s Auction

ANA Governor Don Kagin, PhD. outbid other firms and won the opportunity to conduct the official auction of the National Money Show.

For Kagin, this will be the first auction event hosted by his company in more than 30 years. The Tiburon, California-based coin firm specializes in territorial and private-issue gold coins, but it has extensive experience in other areas as well–including type and rare date federal issues and paper money.

Session One of the three session auction kicks off tonight at 6:00 pm and includes a deep selection of territorial issues, including a notable collection of Bechtler coinage. Sessions 2 and 3 commence starting at 6:00 pm on Friday.

There is still time to register and bid in this auction. Visit to learn more.

1913 Nickel

On Friday morning, CoinWeek will film an educational video segment with Douglas Mudd on the 1913 nickel. The 1913 nickel was struck clandestinely and is one of the most storied coins in the U.S. series. Five examples are known and at one point all five examples were held in the collections of “Colonel” E. H. R. Green and then later Eric P. Newman. The ANA’s example is an impaired proof that is said to grade AU58.
