One Day Later, Sense of Normalcy Returns to 2017 FUN Show

2017 FUN Show in Ft. Lauderdale, Forida

By CoinWeek News Staff ….
One day after the shooting at the Ft. Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL), a sense of normalcy has returned to the 2017 FUN Show. The incident had cast a pall upon the bourse floor yesterday, as news of the attack became known. Flights into and out of FLL were temporarily grounded or delayed, interfering with the travel of some at the convention center.

But today has seen a change in spirit.

People have adjusted their travel plans and the floor is full of buyers. According to Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Vice President Bob Hurst, the Broward County Convention Center responded to the airport shooting within hours by increasing security at the show. FUN is also working with local police to make the venue even more secure. The augmented security presence is visible today, helping to give piece of mind to many attendees.

Updated Information

The alleged airport shooter, 22-year-old Esteban Santiago, is an Iraq War veteran who flew in from Alaska where he resided with a woman and a child. Born in New Jersey, Santiago was raised in Puerto Rico. He received a general discharge from the Alaska National Guard for unsatisfactory performance on August 16, 2016. Before his stint in the Guard, Santiago was part of the Army Reserves.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the alleged gunman visited an FBI office in the city of Anchorage in November, complaining that a United States intelligence agency was attempting mind control techniques on him and that the Central intelligence Agency (CIA) was forcing Santiago to watch ISIS videos available on the Internet. While he explicitly told the agents that he had no intention of harming other people, the FBI contacted police and Santiago was admitted to a mental health facility for a psychiatric evaluation.

Santiago’s family is unaware of any diagnosis of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder.
