Perth Mint Coin Profiles – Tuvalu 2019 Periodic Table 150th Anniversary 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Perth Mint - Tuvalu 2019 Periodic Table Silver Coin

This 1oz silver proof coin celebrates the 150th anniversary of the creation of the periodic table.

Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev, often referred to as the Father of the Periodic Table, is credited with formalizing the arrangement of the chemical elements in 1869. By grouping the known elements in order of increasing atomic weight he developed a principle which he called the Periodic Law. This led to the realization that certain types of elements occurred regularly, confirming their resultant pattern, or periodicity.

Each coin is meticulously struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver, and issued as Tuvalu legal tender.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 3,000 of the 150th Anniversary of the Periodic Table 2019 1oz Silver Proof Coin.

Design

The coin’s reverse portrays a profile portrait of the renowned scientist. Colored atomic symbols reflecting periodic table elements spell out the anniversary date of 150 years. Included in the design are the words ‘PERIODIC TABLE’ and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2019 year-date, the coin’s weight and fineness, and the monetary denomination. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning living monarch and the longest in the history of the United Kingdom. Her effigy first appeared on a coin in 1952. The Ian Rank-Broadley portrait is the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to appear on a coin. The design was adopted in 1989.

Designer(s):

Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was chosen to appear on the coinage of the United Kingdom in 1998. His design began to appear on collector coins that year and became widespread starting in 1999 (View Designer’s Profile).

Natasha Muhl is a designer and illustrator for the Perth Mint. She is drawn to natural motifs, such as animals, birds, gems, and ocean life (View Designer’s Profile).
