Royal Mint ‘Strikes Gold’ to Remember England’s FIFA World Cup™ Triumph 50 Years on

Fifty years since footballing legend Bobby Moore hoisted the Jules Rimet trophy in front of 96,924 fans at Wembley Stadium, The Royal Mint is celebrating this landmark moment in sporting history with the Football Association by inviting Stephanie Moore MBE to strike an official 1966 FIFA World Cup England 2016 Alderney £5 Coin to mark the event.

Stephanie has struck a limited edition gold variant of the coin, a Brilliant Uncirculated ‘mint condition’ version, which will also take centre stage in the official coin toss at Wembley Stadium this evening in the match between England and Portugal – the last international before the England team head to France for the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.

A donation from each coin purchased will be made to the Bobby Moore Fund, remembering the 1966 cup-winning captain and supporting Cancer Research UK’s pioneering research into bowel cancer.

Stephanie Moore said: “I am delighted to have been invited to The Royal Mint to strike the official FA £5 coin to celebrate the 50th anniversary of England winning the World Cup. I’m sure Bobby would have been proud to see a coin created in honour of the team, and it’s a great way of raising vital funds and awareness of the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK’s work to beat bowel cancer.”

“Having a coin to mark 50 years since England won the World Cup is a brilliant way of celebrating the anniversary,” says Martin Glenn, chief executive of The Football Association. “Not just because it honours Bobby Moore, but also because it features Her Majesty the Queen, now in her 90th year, who is Patron of The FA – and who presented Bobby Moore with the Jules Rimet World Cup trophy on that famous afternoon in July 1966.”

Anne Jessopp, The Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coin, said: “The Royal Mint has commemorated events and occasions of national significance on Britain’s coinage for centuries. Fifty years on, it is fitting that this special 1966 FIFA World Cup England 2016 coin should be used in the coin toss for the last friendly game before England head to France for the UEFA Euro 2016 tournament.”

As the country dreams of footballing glory once more this summer at the European Championships in France, this £5 coin captures that day when sporting history was made and England were world champions.

The coin is struck in Brilliant Uncirculated finish, and is also available in limited numbers struck to Proof standard in either 22-carat gold or .925 sterling silver from The Royal Mint’s website www.royalmint.com.
