Stack’s Bowers Galleries Presents the October 2017 World Collectors Choice Online Auction

Stack’s Bowers Galleries is excited to announce details of their upcoming October 2017 Collector’s Choice Online Auction of World and Ancient coins as well as World Currency. The Ancient and World Coins auction will begin live bidding on Wednesday, October 4 at 8 AM Pacific Time. The World Currency will start seven hours later, beginning at 3 PM Pacific Time.

The Collectors Choice sales close live with an auctioneer, though you may also submit bids ahead of time.

The sale begins with over 60 lots of Ancient coins featuring a wide variety of types and designs that are sure to attract collectors of all specialties. The myriad regions represented include Celtic, Sicilian, Macedon, Thrace, Athens, Ionia, Syria, Rome and Byzantine.

A highlight of this section is an appealing Athenian “New Style” AR Tetradrachm.

World coins follow immediately and with over 650 lots there is sure to be something for collectors of all types. This sale features prominent sections of France, Germany, Great Britain, Philippines, and Russia. Also offered will be all manner of Spanish Colonial coinage, including a large Mexican grouping.

One of many highlights is a historically significant Spanish “Cantonal Revolution” 5 Pesetas. This revolution began in July of 1873 in the southeast region of Cartagena. Government forces besieged the city, with the fledgling revolution capitulating just six months later in January of 1874. During the siege, the revolutionary government requisitioned silver from the local populace and minted coins.

The World Currency section contains over 180 lots, with a diverse offering that will satisfy dealers and collectors alike. The French material offered includes an elusive Specimen Proof featuring a stunning fully original 50 Francs design created by Luc Olivier Merson, with allegorical angels on top and at center of the note. This Specimen Proof has no serial numbers, dates, signatures, or watermarks. The centering on this note is fantastic and most would consider it conservatively graded. It is a very scarce piece and the first of such Stack’s Bowers has had the pleasure to offer.

Lot viewing will be available at the Stack’s Bowers and Ponterio Santa Ana office before the sale. Check StacksBowers.com for specific dates and times. And, if you are ready to sell, Stack’s Bowers Galleries offers professional handling of your collection, with a proven track record of accomplished sales. Currently, the firm is accepting consignments for the January 2018 New York International (NYINC) auction as well as the April 2018 Hong Kong sale.
