CoinWeek editor Charles Morgan travels to Berlin, Germany to join Champion Auctions President and Show Panda Creator Michael Chou at a special striking ceremony for the 45 Years of Chinese & Germany Friendship Medal, featuring two Chinese Pandas and the Berlin Bear.
The program is a Chinese and German collaboration that features medals struck in bronze, silver, and silver-plated bronze. In this video, we see the silver-plated bronze medal, designed by Heinz Hoyer, enter production for the first time, just in time for the official handover ceremony of two beautiful panda bears from China to the Berlin Zoo.
Chinese Ambassador Shi Mingde is the guest of honor. He is joined by German Ambassador Dr. Norbert Riedel, German State Mint Director Dr. Andreas Shikura, Michael Chou, and German auctioneer Ulrich Künker.
Numismatic Guaranty Corporation’s (NGC) Richard Stein documented the event and took a small number of early strikes back to NGC’s European office for certification.
After the ceremony, Charles and Michael travel to the Berlin Zoo to see how the last minute preparations for the Panda handover ceremony were shaping up.
