The Beauty and Art of the Duomo in Milan Celebrated on New Italian Coin

By the Italian Mint ……
On October 2, the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance issued a new silver commemorative coin–made by the State Mint–dedicated to one of the most representative monuments of the art and history of Italy: the Duomo, or the Cathedral of Milan.

The coin, designed by the engraver and artist Luciana De Simoni, is produced by the Mint in Rome with a circulation of 4,000 pieces in “Proof” finish.

The commemorative, with a nominal value of 10 euros, belongs to the “Italia delle Arti” series dedicated to the celebration of those works most representative of the creativity and genius of Italian art.

On the obverse of the coin, the engraving artist presents a perspective view of the Cathedral of Milan, symbol of the Lombard capital. The author’s name “L. DE SIMONI ” appears vertically to the left; in the exergue are the words “ITALIAN REPUBLIC”. Beneath this, elements taken from the rose window of the Cathedral are engraved.

On the reverse, you can admire a detail of the precious central window of the presbytery of the Milan Cathedral. In the center are the word “MILAN” and the denomination or face value “10 EURO”. In the left field is the letter “R”, a mint mark identifying the Mint of Rome. In the field on the right is the year of issue “2019”. And finally, in the round is the inscription “ITALIA DELLE ARTS”.

The coins, already available on the online site www.shop.ipzs.it, will be on display in numismatic corner of the library of the Treasury Department at the Ministry of the Economy of via XX Settembre and can be visited upon request of access by writing to [email protected].

Other issues scheduled for release from the State Mint for 2019 include:

  • 5 euro silver coin – Italian Art Series “Santa Maria del Fiore” – Florence, Tuscany.
  • 5 euro silver coin with colored inserts – 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall.

All new 2019 issues will be exhibited during the year at the numismatic corner of the Treasury Department Library inside the Palazzo delle Finance and open to the public upon request via email at [email protected].
