The Royal Mint has today announced the launch of the Sovereign 2019 Gold Bullion and the Half-Sovereign 2019 Gold Bullion Coins, in recognition of both Britain and precious metals’ enduring aptitude for survival and excellence in the face of changing times.
The coins are the latest addition to the Sovereign 2019 range, the flagship collection of The Royal Mint. Known as ‘the chief coin of the world’, the Sovereign has survived retirement, rebirth and reform since it was first struck by The Royal Mint in 1489.
Today’s launch coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Ricardo Ingot plan – a proposal to replace gold coins in circulation with a 60oz ingot that almost scuppered The Sovereign’s revival. A century later the First World War saw the use of gold coins as circulating currency reduce to such a degree that Sovereign production stopped in 1917. But the gold coin endured, now highly prized by collectors and eagerly awaited each year.
The Gold Bullion coins are VAT free and Capital Gains Tax exempt, and individual investors who purchase the coins from Royal Mint Bullion can store them safely and securely at The Royal Mint Vault, which is guarded 24/7 by security staff. Investors have full legal ownership of the coins, and can liquidate their holdings at any time, making them a cost-effective and convenient investment option. Struck in 22 carat gold, the coin is accredited with UK government assurance of weight purity.
Chris Howard, Director of Precious Metals for The Royal Mint, said:
“We are delighted to launch the new Sovereign 2019 Gold Bullion and the Half-Sovereign 2019 Gold Bullion Coins as part of the flagship Sovereign range which has an enduring history of survival in the face of adversity.
“As Britain faces one of the most politically challenging times in its history, the launch of the coins is a striking reminder of our ability for overcoming the odds. This also rings true for precious metals more generally, as they continue to provide a compelling investment alternative to diversify portfolios and safeguard investments against market turbulence.”
In keeping with tradition, The Sovereign 2019 features Benedetto Pistrucci’s timeless depiction of St George and the dragon, a design that has come to define The Sovereign. First struck for the Sovereigns of George III in 1817, this iconic image has endured for more than 200 years.
The range is available for purchase from today worldwide at The Royal Mint’s trading website www.royalmintbullion.com.
