In recognition of their outstanding contributions to numismatics, the American Numismatic Association (ANA) will induct the following individuals into the Numismatic Hall of Fame at the World’s Fair of Money awards banquet on Friday, August 14, in Rosemont, Illinois.
James Edward Charlton
A numismatist most of his life and an ANA life member, James Charlton began to produce catalogs about Canadian coins and tokens in 1952. His numismatic passion grew and the published catalogs expanded to include paper money of all stripes (government and private emission) and Canadian colonial tokens. Presently the ANA library contains more than 100 editions of approximately 15 titles attributed to him.
In 1972 Charlton received the J. Douglas Ferguson Award and was recognized as the numismatist who made the greatest contribution to the advancement of numismatics in Canada in fields of research, writing and publishing. The Royal Canadian Numismatic Association (RCNA), of which he was also a life member, named Charlton a Fellow for his performance and contributions of worthy service to the field of numismatics in 2002.
Charlton is a recipient of the Royal Canadian Mint Award for Numismatic Education (1988), ANA Presidential Award (2001), RCNA President’s Award (2004) and the Paul Fiocca Award (2008).
Charlton has written a variety of numismatic books, including Catalogue of Canadian Coins, Tokens & Fractional Currency (1952); Canadian Bank Notes; Canadian Government Paper Money; Charlton’s Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins; Coin Guide with Premium List of Canadian and US Coins and Bills Fully Illustrated; and Standard Grading Guide to Canadian Decimal Coins (1965).
Charlton died September 30, 2013, at the age of 102.
David E.Schenkman
Involved in coin collecting for more than 60 years, David Schenkman started in the hobby as a casual collector but ultimately became a renowned writer, editor and professional numismatist.
A prolific writer, Schenkman is the author of eight books, each of which is considered a standard reference. He is the author of more than 200 published articles on tokens and medals. Schenkman presently serves as a contributing editor and columnist for The Numismatist, for which he has written more than 100 columns.
Schenkman’s efforts have earned him 24 literary and cataloging awards from the Token and Medal Society (TAMS), including eight gold Franklin Mint/Segal awards (He is the only person to win this award more than twice). He is also the recipient of the AVA Fare Box Literary Award (1975), National Scrip Collectors Literary Award (1988), ANA’s Heath Literary Award (1994), and Wayte & Olga Raymond Memorial Literary Award (2013).
“Being inducted into the ANA Hall of Fame means I will become part of a select group of numismatists, several of whom I’ve been privileged to know and learn from over the years. It is a humbling realization and a great honor,” Schenkman said.
Schenkman is a recipient of the ANA’s Glenn Smedley Award, the Medal of Merit, the ANA Lifetime Achievement Award, the Farran Zerbe Award, Krause Publications Numismatic Ambassador Award, Token and Medal Society Distinguished Service Award, Civil War Token Society Service Award, Civil War Token Society Hall of Fame, MD TAMS Frank G. Duffield Award, National Scrip Collectors Outstanding Member and Virginia Numismatic Association Man of the Year Award.
Schenkman served as editor for the Token and Medal Society’s Journal and book publications for 27 years and as publications editor for the Civil War Token Society for five years. Schenkman is a past president of both organizations and remains instrumental in content and literary direction. He has been an ANA member since 1962; his other memberships include the Numismatic Literary Guild (NLG), American Vecturist Association (AVA), National Scrip Collectors Association and the Virginia Numismatic Association.
