On Tuesday, January 30, the United States Mint announced pricing for the silver $1 and clad half dollar 2018 Breast Cancer Coin Awareness commemorative. Prices for the gold $5 commemorative are determined by the Mint’s Numismatic and Commemorative Gold and Platinum Products pricing grid, available on its website, usmint.gov.

The following table presents both introductory and regular retail pricing for both Proof and Uncirculated versions of the silver and clad coins:

All coins in the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Program will be available for order starting March 15. Typically, introductory pricing applies to the first 30 days of sales.

About the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Program

Authorized by Public Law 114-148, the Breast Cancer Awareness Commemorative Coin Act was signed into law by President Obama on April 29, 2016. The act calls for the production of up to 50,000 $5 gold coins made in a “pink gold” alloy made up of not less than 75% gold; up to 400,000 $1 silver coins in the traditional .900 fine, 11.34 grams, 1.5″ format; and not more than 750,000 copper-nickel clad half dollar coins.

The gold $5 will be the first “pink gold” coin issued by the U.S. Mint.

The bill also established a design competition open to Mint artists, engravers and interested members of the general public. Candidate designs were judged by a six-person committee consisting of three members of the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) and three members of the Commission of Fine Arts (CFA).

U.S. Representative Carolyn B. Maloney (D-NY12), Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF) President and CEO Myra Biblowit, BCRF Chief Mission Officer Dr. Marc Hurlbert, and April Stafford, the Mint’s Director of the Office of Design and Management, accompanied breast cancer survivors on October 22, 2016 to reveal the winning designs.

U.S. Mint Artistic infusion Program (AIP) artist Emily Damstra created the program’s common obverse and reverse. Since 2000, Damstra has worked as a freelance science illustrator, working in a variety of media on hundreds of science-related subjects. She studied Drawing and Illustration at Alma College and graduated with a Masters in Fine Arts in Science Illustration from the University of Michigan. Previously, she has contributed many designs for the Royal Canadian Mint.

Two woman feature prominently on the Breast Cancer coin Awareness commemorative obverse; a younger woman, wearing a head scarf and raising her right fist, appears confident, positive and determined on the left, while an older woman, eyes closed and hands over heart, appears happy and at peace. A loop of ribbon is located next to the younger woman, and a swallowtail butterfly flies above the pair. Inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2018, and IN GOD WE TRUST. The reverse features a large version of the swallowtail butterfly, symbol of hope and the soul. Inscriptions here include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the coin’s denomination, E PLURIBUS UNUM, and BREAST CANCER AWARENESS.

The Mint announced the winning designs on October 23, 2016.

Surcharges of $35, $10 and $5 would be added to the face value of the $5 gold coin, silver dollar and clad half dollar, respectively. After the Treasury Department recoups all expenses relating to the commemorative’s production and sales, proceeds from the surcharges will go to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in New York City.
