It was history in the making, and CoinWeek was there.

On March 31, 2017 in the carriage house of the Evergreen Museum in Baltimore – once the home of T. Harrison Garrett and the Garrett Family Coin CollectionStack’s Bowers Galleries, in conjunction with Sotheby’s, conducted the fifth and final sale of the D. Brent Pogue Family Coin Collection. Over the span of two years, from 2015 through 2017, the record-breaking sale of the Pogue Family Collection totaled $106,720,432.25 USD, with Part V alone generating $21,402,213.75 of that.

Built over several decades by Brent Pogue and his father Mack, the collection was home to many of the highest-quality specimens of early U.S. coinage struck between 1793 and 1840. Highlights of the sale above include the Class I Dexter 1804 Draped Bust U.S. silver dollar, which went for $3,290,000; the finest-known 1811 half cent, which brought $998,750; and the Levick Plate Sheldon-13 1793 Liberty Cap cent, which brought $940,000 – the most valuable circulated cent ever sold.

We may never see another collection like this in our lifetimes. Enjoy!

  1. I am glad that the Pogue sales are over.
It will be interesting to know how much Pogue paid at auction versus what they sold for.
