World Coin Profiles – Australian Opal Lunar Series – Year of the Dog 2018 1oz Silver Proof Coin

Opal - Year of the Dog - Perth Mint

The Perth Mint has unveiled its newest issue in its long-running lunar coin series. This year’s coin features a beautiful full-color opal vignette of a dog set in the center of an ornate design featuring a Chinese key and floral design.

This is an exceptional addition to the 2018 lunar coins and would make a wonderful gift for those born in the Year of the Dog.

Struck from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality, the Year of the Dog 1 ounce silver Proof has a face value of $1 and is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965.

The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the Australian Opal Lunar Series – Year of the Dog 2018 1oz Silver Proof Coin.

Design:

The coin’s reverse incorporates an inner panel design of a dog detailed in pure Australia opal. The outer panel of the coin depicts a collection of stylised leaves and flowers. The design includes the inscription YEAR OF THE DOG, the 2018 year-date, and The Perth Mint’s traditional ‘P’ mintmark.

The coin’s obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, and the monetary denomination. Queen Elizabeth II is the longest reigning living monarch and the longest in the history of the United Kingdom. Her effigy first appeared on a coin in 1952. The Ian Rank-Broadley portrait is the fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II to appear on a coin. The design was adopted in 1989.
