The third coin of in the Austrian Mint’s “Heavenly Messengers” series is dedicated to Raphael, the prototype of a guardian angel. The story of Tobias and the Angel, probably written around 200 BCE, is one of the late writings of the Old Testament.
Tobias and the Angel
“Tobias went in search of a companion and met Raphael. Raphael was an angel, but Tobias did not know it. As the young Tobias wanted to bathe in the river, a fish shot up from the water and wanted to devour him. The angel called to Tobias: pack him! Then the young man seized and threw the fish to shore.” (Book of Tobit 5: 4 or 6: 1-9) – As a result, his offal proved to be a very effective medicine.

The reverse design shows the angel Raphael as a youth, with wavy hair and a pilgrim’s staff. He holds his arm angled, raising his hand in blessing. His wings are made of peacock feathers. Raphael is the patron saint of pilgrims and travelers; he is revered by both Christians and Jews as an angel with special healing powers.
A ring of closely placed dots or beads partitions the obverse design from the outer ring of inscriptions. REPUBLIK ÖSTERREICH (technically, R * E * P * U * B * L * I * K Ö * S * T * E * R * R * E * I * C * H) is inscribed clockwise along the top three-quarters of the rim. The denomination of 10 EURO (1 * 0 E * U * R * O) is found at the bottom. The date, 2018, is located near the bottom.
