The Royal Canadian Mint has donated a $20 Fine Silver Coin – Tom Thomson: Spring Ice (1916) to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. The coin was presented by Mint Board of Directors Member John Bell on Sunday, January 17, in conjunction with the Gallery’s official opening of its 2016 season.

“The Mint’s engraving of Tom Thomson’s Spring Ice honours a legendary artist who has inspired generations of Canadians to express their own talent in an endless variety of art forms,” said John Bell, Member of the Royal Canadian Mint Board of Directors. “We are pleased to donate this coin to the Tom Thomson Art Gallery to recognize its achievement in sharing the legacy of Tom Thomson and the great Canadian artists who have followed him.”

“It is a wonderful initiative on behalf of the Royal Canadian Mint to create this commemorative coin in honour of Canada’s most iconic artist,” said Virginia Eichhorn, Director and Chief Curator of the Tom Thomson Art Gallery. “We appreciate the incredible care and consideration that the Mint has put into the creation of this very special coin.”

The precise engraving of this coin masterfully recreates every brushstroke from the original Tom Thomson landscape painting, with beautiful detailing and raised elements recapturing its depth and subtleties. Crafted of one-ounce of 99.99% fine silver, this coin retails for $114.95 CAD and is limited to a world-wide mintage of 8,500.

The coin can be ordered by contacting the Mint at 1-800-267-1871 in Canada, 1-800-268-6468 in the US, or online at www.mint.ca. It can also be purchased at the Royal Canadian Mint’s boutiques in Ottawa, Winnipeg and Vancouver, as well as through the Mint’s network of dealers and distributors (in Canada and the USA only).
