The Royal Mint Issues Coins to Mark 70th Birthday of Prince Charles

Prince Charles 70th Birthday Coin Royal Mint

The Royal Mint today revealed the new coin design that will commemorate the latest celebration for the Royal Family in 2018: the seventieth birthday of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales, which takes place on Wednesday 14th November 2018.

The portrait of The Prince of Wales has been created by experienced engraver Robert Elderton, whose previous coin designs include the 40th anniversary of The Queen’s coronation in 1993 and a portrait of HRH The Duke of Sussex on his 21st birthday. The depiction is paired with the official portrait of Her Majesty and appears on limited editions of both £5 and £25 coins.

The coins continue The Royal Mint’s long-standing tradition of marking the achievements and milestones of the Royal Family, joining coins struck for his 50th and 60th birthdays. As The Prince of Wales celebrates his 70th birthday, he finds himself at the center of an ever-growing family who will share this special occasion with him.

Nicola Howell, Director of Consumer Coin at The Royal Mint commented:

“It is an honor for The Royal Mint to mark such a significant birthday for The Prince of Wales and we join the British public in celebrating the occasion.

“It’s been a truly unforgettable year of royal celebration with the birth of His Royal Highness Prince Louis of Cambridge, the wedding of Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex and the ‘big’ fifth birthday of HRH Prince George of Cambridge. The Royal Mint is proud to play a part in these moments and celebrate with the nation.”

The coins will be available in Brilliant Uncirculated, Gold Proof, Platinum Proof and Silver Proof from £13.

The Royal Mint has an unbroken history of minting British coinage dating back over 1,100 years. Based in the Tower of London for over 500 years, by 1812 the Mint had moved out of the Tower to premises on Tower Hill in London. In 1967, the building of a new Royal Mint began on its current site in South Wales, UK, to accommodate the minting of UK decimal coinage. Today, the Mint is the world’s largest export mint, supplying coins to the UK and overseas countries.
