On Sunday, September 1, GreatCollections sold a 1909/8 overdate Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle graded MS66 by PCGS and approved by CAC. A pop five coin with only one finer at PCGS–and only one of three at that grade with CAC approval–the winning bid was a strong $217,600, or $304,893 with buyer’s premium. This price is not far from the auction record for the grade, which is $336,000 for one of the other PCGS MS66 CAC examples in a May 2022 auction.
The specimen GreatCollections just sold has original surfaces with a lustrous creamy gold color. Like the CAC green bean implies, the strike is mostly solid though the lettering in LIBERTY is a little soft. As far as the overdate goes, the numeral “8” is clearly visible beneath the second “9” in the date.
The 1909/8 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is part of the St. Gaudens $20 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1907-1932) and St. Gaudens $20 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1907-1932) – CAC PCGS Registry Sets, and judging by the bidding and hammer price, collectors were clearly enthusiastic about the opportunity to add such a high-quality important overdate to their collections.
