Two rarities from the fabled Carson City Mint highlight the offerings at Heritage’s October 8 – 13 US Coins Signature Auction to be held in conjunction with the PNG New York Invitational show. This event will take place October 8-9 at the Millennium Broadway Hotel, conveniently located in the heart of the world’s largest numismatic hub, New York City within half a block of Times Square. Further sessions will take place exclusively through Heritage Live on October 12-13.

The 1870-CC double eagle is well-known as one of the stoppers in the Liberty double eagle series, and examples in all grades are highly desired. It ranks among Garrett and Guth’s 100 Greatest American Coins, third edition, where it is heralded as the “King of Carson City gold.” Out of a mintage of 3,789 pieces, only 35-45 are known today, most of which are in the VF-XF range, with no mint state coins known. Our offering of a PCGS-graded VF30 example is an important opportunity for those collectors looking to combine rarity with the historical allure of the Comstock Lode.
While the 1876-CC dime is quite common in most grades, specimen strikings bearing this date and mintmark are extremely rare. Estimates of this coin’s survival range to no more than seven coins, with three distinct examples confirmed. Our New York auction features one such piece graded Specimen-65 by NGC, and while the reasons for this coin’s existence are unknown, its profound rarity and special status are unquestioned.
The 1796 quarter offerings in this auction deserve special mention. 1796 quarters are well known to numismatists as a rare one year type, and ownership of a coin in any grade is a numismatic accomplishment. This auction features three such coins: lot 4713, graded MS64; lot 4712, graded MS63, and for the relatively budget-minded, lot 4711 graded Fine 12. All are the B-2 variety, all are graded by PCGS, and the two Mint State coins come from The Pannonia Collection, Part Two, serving as testimony to the quality material our consignor has chosen to offer. Type collectors looking to complete their sets will want to pay close attention to these offerings.
