Certified Coin Marketplace – CAC-Approved Coins Bring Premiums in November 2019

In addition to realizing newsworthy premiums in a public auction in Baltimore, CAC-approved coins outperformed other certified coins in various public internet sales during the month of November. Here are 10 examples, which were selected from a large number of results that could have been listed.

1. 1895 Dime in MS-67

On November 14, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a CAC-approved MS-67 grade 1895 dime for $10,200 USD. On February 28, 2019, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a PCGS-graded MS-67 1895 dime without a CAC sticker for considerably less at $6,600.

2. 1873-CC Trade Dollar in MS-62

On November 14, Stack’s Bowers auctioned an NGC-graded MS-62 1873-CC Trade dollar, with a CAC sticker, for $20,400. The 1873-CC is not auctioned very often. In January 2017, Heritage auctioned a PCGS-graded MS-62 1873-CC Trade dollar without a CAC sticker for $8,812.50. On October 5, 2016, when market levels were higher, Heritage auctioned a different PCGS graded MS-62 1873-CC Trade dollar without a CAC sticker for $11,762.93.

3. 1851-O $20 Gold Double Eagle in AU-55

On November 14, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a CAC-approved AU-55 grade 1851-O $20 gold coin for $9,000. In January 2019 at the FUN Convention, Heritage auctioned a PCGS-graded AU-55 1851-O $20 gold coin without a CAC sticker for $5,160. In August 2018 at the ANA, Heritage auctioned another PCGS-graded AU-55 1851-O $20 gold coin without a CAC sticker for $6,300.

4. 1830 ‘Small 0’ Half Dollar in AU-58

On November 15, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a CAC-approved AU-58 grade 1830 ‘Small 0’ half dollar for $1,200. In April 2019 at the Central States Numismatic Convention, Heritage auctioned a PCGS-graded AU-58 1830 ‘Small 0’ half dollar without a CAC sticker for $690. On Nov. 11, 2018, Heritage sold another non-CAC PCGS-graded AU-58 1830 ‘Small 0’ half, for $660.

5. 1836 Reeded Edge Half Dollar in MS-61

On November 15, Stack’s Bowers auctioned an NGC-graded MS-61 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar with a CAC sticker for $14,400.

‘Mint State’ 1836 Reeded Edge halves are not auctioned often. In March 2018, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a PCGS-graded MS-62 1836 Reeded Edge half dollar without a CAC sticker for $13,200. Market levels for 1836 halves are not higher now than they were in March 2018. An immediate point is that an NGC-graded MS-61 coin with a CAC sticker realized more than a PCGS-graded MS-62 coin without a CAC sticker that was struck from the same pair of dies.

6. 1859 Liberty Seated Half Dollar in PF-63

On November 15, Stack’s Bowers auctioned an NGC-certified Proof-63 1859 Liberty Seated half dollar with a CAC sticker for $2,880. The day before, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a PCGS-certified Proof-63 1859 Liberty Seated half dollar without a CAC sticker for $1,800.

7. 1870-CC Liberty Seated Silver Dollar in XF-45

On November 17, the firm of GreatCollections sold a CAC-approved XF-45 grade 1870-CC Liberty Seated silver dollar for $5,175. In August 2018 and again in August 2019, Heritage auctioned the same PCGS-graded XF-45 1870-CC silver dollar without a CAC sticker for $3,840 in each instance.

8. 1901 Quarter in MS-65

On November 24, GreatCollections sold an NGC-graded MS-65 1901 quarter with a CAC sticker for $990.98.

PCGS- or NGC-graded 1901 quarters have not appeared often in recent years. On October 24, 2018, Stack’s Bowers auctioned a PCGS-graded MS-65 1901 quarter, without a CAC sticker, for $780. In December 2017, Heritage sold a PCGS-graded MS-65 1901 quarter without a CAC sticker for $900.

9. 1963 Quarter in MS-67

GreatCollections sold a CAC-approved MS-67 grade 1963 quarter for $1,743.75 on November 24 and a PCGS-graded MS-67 1963 quarter without a CAC sticker for $759.38 on October 6, 2019.

10. 1900-S Morgan Silver Dollar in MS-64

On November 24, GreatCollections sold a CAC approved MS-64 grade 1900-S Morgan silver dollar for $593.45. On November 20, Heritage sold a PCGS-graded MS-64 1900-S Morgan without a CAC sticker for $456. On July 31, 2019, Stack’s Bowers sold a PCGS-graded MS-64 1900-S Morgan without a CAC sticker for this same price, $456.
