On Friday, January 6, the Society of Silver Dollar Collectors (SSDC) awarded CoinWeek editor Charles Morgan its prestigious A. George Mallis Memorial Award for the December 16, 2016 episode of the CoinWeek Podcast, “Talking Morgan Dollars with Leroy Van Allen”. In the Podcast, Morgan discussed the 1964 Morgan dollar hubs recently discovered at the United States Mint with Van Allen himself and asked the elder statesman of Morgan dollar varieties to reminisce about his career in the field and what it was like to get Morgan dollar bags at face value directly from the Treasury Department in the 1960s.
The A. George Mallis Memorial Award is bestowed annually at the Florida United Numismatists (FUN) Winter convention to those that make a significant contribution to VAM Collecting. VAM is an acronym that blends the first letters of the last names of Leroy Van Allen and A. George Mallis, the two authors who popularized the collecting of Morgan dollars and Peace dollars by variety with the publications of several important standard references, including their book, the Comprehensive Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars, originally published in 1971.
Mallis passed away on December 30, 1999 at the age of 85.
In accepting the award, Morgan said that it was a pleasure to give a new generation of Morgan dollar variety collectors a chance to hear about the series from Van Allen himself.
“Leroy is a legend in the field, but given his age, he is no longer attending major coin conventions. This Podcast offered collectors a chance to hear Leroy speak about a topic that he has shown a great passion for over the years and it was a pleasure to have him participate with us as we rolled out our exclusive coverage of the 1964 Morgan dollar hubs that were recently found at the U.S. Mint,” Morgan said.
