Numismatic Vienna: A Visit to the Austrian National Numismatic Collection – 4K Video

On January 28, 2016, CoinWeek was invited to a very special behind-the-scenes tour of the Austrian National Numismatic Collection, which is housed at the Vienna Art History Museum.

The coin collection at the Vienna Art History Museum (Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien) is significant not only because of many of the great rarities counted amongst its holdings, but also due to its unusual depth and breadth. With over 600,000 pieces, the collection in Vienna is considered the fifth-largest in the world and is rivaled only by the numismatic collections at the Hermitage in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the British Museum in London, the holdings of the American Numismatic Society in New York, and of course, the National Numismatic Collection of the United States in Washington, D.C.

CoinWeek’s access to the collection went far beyond the thousands of rare and unusual numismatic items on permanent display, including the seven-kilo gold “Alchemist’s Medallion” of Leopold I and a collection of important medieval hammered dies, but to pieces not on display, such as a rare 1794 dollar, and one of the finest 1799 eagles existent.

This travelogue was shot in 4K and gives collectors a taste of beautiful Vienna, a destination that after you watch this video, will rank high among your list of “must visit” numismatic destinations.
