Sovereign of Elizabeth I

This preview for our January 2018 New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) Auction hails from the Golden Age of English history, and includes a Sovereign of Elizabeth I. One of the most famous historical events to occur in her long and illustrious reign was the sinking of the Spanish Armada.

Sovereign of Elizabeth IThe escalating conflict between Catholic Spain and Protestant England came to a head in 1588, when King Philip II of Spain planned an invasion of England. The English navy defeated the Spaniards in the Battle of Gravelines and then chased the retreating Spaniards counterclockwise around the British Isles. On this journey, severe weather and powerful westerly winds blew Spanish ships aground.

Thus the English prevented the invasion, and crippled Spain’s status on the European stage.

This Fine Sovereign of Elizabeth I of 30 Shillings features an image of Queen Elizabeth enthroned facing, holding a globus cruciger and scepter, with a portcullis at her feet. The reverse features the Tudor rose (Elizabeth was destined to be the last of the Tudor dynasty), with a square topped shield emblazoned with the royal arms. This example is well-made and sharp. It is sure to elicit spirited bidding, as it is a classic world type that appeals to numerous collector groups.

We are currently taking consignments of world and ancient coins as well as world paper money for our January 2018 New York International Auction.
