France 2016 UEFA 100 Euro Gold Uncirculated Coin

France is celebrating the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Euro2016 championship game with the issuance of silver and gold commemorative coins honoring the occasion. The Euro2016 soccer championship is a quadrennial event that will be held in France from June 10 through July 10, 2016 and is expected to draw millions of attendees and television viewers. The UEFA oversees association football throughout Europe and parts of Asia, which fields several of the organization’s 55 association members. The UEFA was established on June 15, 1954 in Basel, Switzerland with 25 members. By the end of the 1990s, the number of members had soared; today there are 55 members.

The UEFA has several responsibilities, including competitions among its association members and improving the quality and presence of national football in Eurasia. Meanwhile, the associations also aim to enhance sporting opportunities for the football teams, coaches, players, and spectators. The UEFA Nations League consists of four individual leagues, and each league contains four groups consisting of three or four football teams. Some UEFA events are competitive, while others are non-competitive exhibitions. Each league is ordered according to the overall strengths and rankings of its member teams, and those teams compete with each other, advancing through playoff rounds until an eventual winner is declared in a championship format.

The obverse of the 2016 France 100 Euro UEFA gold coin illustrates the lower two-thirds of a football player running across a football field, his legs poised for kicking a ball. The UEFA logo is incorporated into the upper right-hand corner of the obverse, and below that element are the words “Euro2016 France” inscribed in two horizontal lines.

The background of the coin features a multi-elemental pattern featuring hexagonal and other geometric shapes symbolizing the joyous crowds and electric jubilation of the event.

Along the bottom portion of the obverse is the indication of a grassy football field. The coin’s date, 2016, is located on the field and is surrounded by a “horn of plenty”, or cornucopia (the Monnaie de Paris mintmark), on the left and the mark of current Monnaie de Paris mint master Yves Sampo–a pentagon containing the letters AG, MP and YS–on the right. The UEFA trademark is seen on the lower right of the obverse near the rim.

The overall effect of the doubled hexagon is a geometric shape with 24 sides, each side representing one of the two dozen nations competing in the championship soccer event. Within the larger hexagonal element is a slightly smaller hexagon within which the denomination, 100 EURO, is inscribed in one horizontal line of italicized text.

The words RÉPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE curve from just left of the word EURO around the top and bottom of the denominational inscription. Within the words RÉPUBLIQUE FRANCAISE, branches of oak and laurel encircle the 10 EURO inscription and loosely indicate the Euro symbol.
