Heritage Auctions: 18th Century Treasures Highlight Dallas US Coin Offerings

Rarities from the early days of the US mint highlight the offerings in Heritage’s October 3 – 5 US Coins Signature Auction, taking place in our world headquarters in Dallas and worldwide through www.HA.com. The finest offerings will be a part of the Premier session, scheduled for 6PM CT on Monday, October 3.

United States 1794 silver dollar PCGS VF25. Images courtesy Heritage AuctionsHighlighting this auction is an example of the 1794 dollar, the first silver dollar issued by the US mint. These extremely popular coins are highlights whenever they appear at auction, and this example, a delightful VF25 coin as graded by PCGS, illustrates the perimeter weakness common to this issue. This coin is an old friend, pedigreed to the first public auction held by Steve Ivy Numismatic Auctions in 1976.

1796 was the first year that the Mint struck every denomination authorized at the time. The 1796 No Stars quarter eagle is one of two one year types minted during the year, with this issue claiming the status because stars were added to the obverse for coins issued later in the year. As such, it is under high demand from both specialists and type set collectors. The example in our Dallas auction is graded XF45 by PCGS, with traces of prooflike reflectivity.

1797 saw the first emission of eagles with the large Heraldic eagle design, and this issue is represented in our Dallas auction by a coin graded MS62 by NGC. 1797 eagles are rarely found in grades higher than MS62.
