Heritage Auctions – Select 1804 Small 8 Over Large 8 Half Eagle Sold for $54K

At the Heritage Summer FUN Signature Auction one of the highlights was a PCGS-graded MS63 example of the 1804 half eagle, variety BD-7. At R.4, this is the most collectible variety of the three 1804 Small Over Large 8 half eagles (the variety is better described as Normal 8 over Large 8). The upright of the E in STATES is over the space between two clouds. The obverse is heavily clashed, and the reverse shows a crack from the eagle’s left (facing) wing through the ribbon to the D in UNITED.

John Dannreuther estimates 100 to 150 pieces extant, but only a small handful compares to this select offering. A mere four pieces have been certified in finer grades by the major grading services combined – two coins each at NGC and PCGS, all of which graded MS64.

Lightly frosted olive-gold surfaces are inarguably natural. The devices show a strong overall impression with a few areas of localized softness. Heavy as-made adjustment marks occur above MERIC. Q. David Bowers wrote in 2011 that this coin “exemplifies high quality and nice eye appeal.” We wholeheartedly agree.

The FUN Signature Auction coin brought $54,000.00 (includes Buyer’s Premium BP) Congratulation to the new owner. The coin is a beauty.

In Other News – Changes to Bidding

Heritage Auctions has announced a change to its bidding practices that will allow more bidders to pursue items in online auctions.

Effective immediately, the increments in which collectors can bid in Internet absentee bidding will be cut in half. The change will not affect live bidding (including HA.com/Live), in order to save live bidders time by keeping the bidding in live sessions moving at a brisk pace.

“This change will benefit both buyers and sellers,” Heritage Auctions Co-Founder Jim Halperin said. “Cutting in half the size of bid increments will increase the confidence and aggressiveness of buyers who are unsure about increasing a bid, and it benefits the sellers by making more clients more likely to leave a proxy bid on a wider array of available lots.”

The change is significant for Heritage Auctions, as approximately 60% of Heritage Auctions’ 2018 sales were conducted online. With more than 40 categories of art, jewelry, collectibles, and other valuable objects, Heritage Auctions is the largest auction house founded in the United States and the world’s leading collectibles auctioneer.
