Gold rarities are among the highlights of Heritage’s final US coin auction of 2018. The auction will be held December 13-14 at the company’s Beverly Hills location at 9478 West Olympic Blvd. The Premier session, featuring the finest coins in the auction, is scheduled for the evening of Wednesday, December 13.
The 1907 Wire Rim eagle is an ultra-low-mintage issue (472 pieces). Once considered a pattern (and indexed in Judd), it is now believed to be a business strike. These can easily be distinguished from other 1907 eagles by the periods around the legends and denomination on the reverse. The example in this auction has been assigned the MS66 grade by PCGS, and only a handful have been certified finer.
Another very-low-mintage issue is the 1891 double eagle, with fewer than 1,400 coins issued (compare that to the more than 1.2 million such pieces issued by the San Francisco Mint the same year). The Philadelphia coin is unsurprisingly considered a rarity today, with about 100 examples believed to exist. We are privileged to offer an appealing PCGS-graded AU58 example, with the expected very slight wear consistent with the grade and fewer abrasions than normal for AU Liberty twenties. Mint State coins are tough to find, making this piece a viable alternative for the discerning collector.
Grades of Proof-69 Ultra Cameo are common on gold coins produced in the last 35 or so years, but on a quarter eagle from 1899 such a grade deserves attention from any numismatist. NGC has seen fit to assign this grade to the example in our auction, the only so-graded example of the date and one of a mere 11 in the entire series from the major grading services combined. This is the finest 1899 quarter eagle we have ever handled and the first quarter eagle of the grade we have auctioned since 2010.
