By Central Bank of Malta ….
On Monday, 22 August 2016, the Central Bank of Malta will issue a new euro coin set dated 2016 in a brilliant uncirculated version. The set incorporates the eight Maltese euro coins as well as a €2 coin depicting the prehistoric temples of Ġgantija. This coin is the first of a series of seven dedicated to Maltese prehistoric monuments that are also listed as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO.
The Ġgantija Temples complex in Gozo is one of the best preserved on the Maltese islands. The site dates to 3,600 – 3,200 BCE and is one of the oldest free-standing monuments in the world. Ġgantija was listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 1980.
All the coins in the set were struck at the Monnaie de Paris in France. The national sides of the euro coins and the commemorative €2 coin were designed by the Maltese artist Noel Galea Bason.
The sets will be presented in an attractive and illustrated blister-pack and will be limited to 30,000. They may be purchased directly from the e-shop, which can be accessed through the Bank’s website. Alternatively, one may visit the Malta Coins Distribution Centre counter at the main building of the Central Bank of Malta, Castille Place, Valletta.
For more information the public is kindly requested to contact the Bank’s Malta Coins Distribution Centre at [email protected] or by calling (+356) 2550 6006/7.
