Mexico Issues New 20 Peso Commemorative Coin

Banco de Mexico - 50 Year Anniversary of DN-III-E

The Bank of Mexico (Banco de México) has recently issued into circulation a 20 peso commemorative coin honoring the 50th anniversary of the implementation of Plan DN-III-E, which recognizes the work of the Secretariat of National Defense in safeguarding the life and property of those affected by natural disasters.

The obverse of this commemorative coin bears the National Coat of Arms surrounded by the legend “UNITED STATES OF MEXICO”. The reverse takes as its main motif a representation of the distinctive bracelet of Plan DN-III-E, as well as the caption “50 YEARS PLAN DN-III-E” and two images alluding to the Mexican Army and Air Force, respectively; To the left of this bracelet is engraved the year 1966; to the right is the year 2016. Around the bracelet in a semicircle are the legends “SECRETARIAT OF NATIONAL DEFENSE ” at the top and” MEXICAN AIR FORCE AND ARMY” on the bottom. All is framed by a stylized cord.

In the exergue is the denomination with the number “$20”. In the right margin is the mint mark “Mo”, and at the top is the denomination in letters, “TWENTY PESOS”.

This commemorative 20 peso coin is legal tender, and may be used to make any type of payment. It should be noted that, according to the specifications contained in a decree published in the Official Gazette of the Federation on January 24, 2017, the new commemorative has the following technical specifications:

 

  • Face Value: 20 peso
  • Diameter: 32.0 mm
  • Edge: Discontinuous striation
  • Composition: Bimetallic (Central disc: 7.355 g of 75% copper, 25% nickel; Outer ring: 8.590 g of 92% copper, %6 aluminum, 2% nickel)
