Niue 2015 Missing Works of Art: Pontifical of Płock $1 Silver Coin

From the Mint of Poland:

Over centuries they were owned mostly by affluent private collectors and patrons of art. In the turmoil of history some of them vanished without trace. However, missing works of art still are an important part of our culture. The Mint of Poland would like to eternalize the artistic heritage of our country that became irreversibly lost for future generations. The Pontifical of Płock, a medieval liturgical book originally owned by the cathedral chapter in Płock, was appropriated by the Germans during World War II.

The Niue 2015 Missing Works of Art: Pontifical of Płock $1 Silver Coin is a rectangular coin struck by the Mint of Poland for the Polish market. The coin features an elaborate multi-color applications on the coin’s obverse and reverse, along with the application of three rectangular Swarovski crystals.

An empty picture frame. Elaborate decorative elements are gilded. At the bottom of the frame is a oval-shaped portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, derived from Ian Rank-Broadley’s design (View Designer’s Profile). Rank-Bradley’s initials “IRB” are located beneath the bust truncation. Framing the Queen’s portrait is the following inscription, written in Polish and English: UTRACONE DZIEŁA SZTUKI (Lost Works of Art), ELIZABETH II. Wrapping around the inside of the empty frame are the following inscriptions: Ag 9999, 2015, NIUE ISLAND, 1 DOLLAR. The Mint of Poland’s MW mint mark (Warsaw Mint) is located at the bottom inner right corner of the frame.

The inscription “PONTYFIKAŁ PŁOCKI” spans the top of the coin’s design. The Pontifical of Płock is depicting in vivid color, higgling the clear illuminated script of the important lost work. To the left, the Płock Cathedral. To the right, decorative elements derived from the cathedral’s bronze doors. Three clear Swarovski crystal elements have been applied the bottom of the design.
