Description:
In 2015, the Mint of Poland issued a one-ounce and an impressive 10-kilogram silver coin to honor the 10th anniversary of the death of Polish-born Pope John Paul II. Both coins were struck in .9999 silver and issued in the name of the Island of Niue. This, the 1-ounce version, has a mintage of 500 pieces and a face value of $2 NZ.
Obverse:
As statutorily required, the bust of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the obverse of the coin. On this piece, Ian Rank-Broadley’s (View Designer’s Profile) effigy of Her Majesty is reduced in size and offset to the lower left. Nine doves take flight to the queen’s right. One dove, at the five o’clock position, stands upright. To the right of the standing dove is the Mint of Poland’s WM mintmark (Warsaw Mint). Adjacent to the rim is an outer ring that includes the following inscriptions: NIUE ISLAND 2015, ELIZABETH II, 2 DOLLARS, and AG 9999.
Reverse:
A cheerful and energetic-looking Pope John Paul II, facing left. A radiant aureole beams in the distance, forming a halo around his head. In the field, to the left, is an inscription in italicized script that reads: NALITE TIMERE (Ends Not). Adjacent to the rim is an outer ring that includes the following inscriptions: PRO MEMORIA SANCTUS IOANNES PAULUS II, 02.04.2005 – 02.04.2015.
