Numismatic Literary Guild Has Big Plans For ANA Convention

The Numismatic Literary Guild has big doings planned for the 2015 World’s Fair of Money in Rosemont, Illinois.

As always, Thursday will be NLG Day at the show – the day when the Guild will hold its two major annual events, the NLG Symposium and Bash. This year, that date will be Aug. 13.

At 10 a.m., the Guild will host its Symposium in Room 22 of the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center – and this year’s program promises to be exceptionally meaningful and timely. It will explore “The Internet’s Impact on Numismatic Journalism.”

The Guild has assembled an all-star panel of experts to discuss this increasingly important subject. The discussion will be moderated by Charles Morgan, content manager and Editor for CoinWeek.com, the leading online publication devoted to the pursuit of coins and related objects.

Joining Morgan in the program will be Ron Guth, founder and president of CoinFacts.com and former president of PCGS; David C. Harper, editor of Numismatic News; Wayne Homren, editor of The eSylum, online publication of the Numismatic Bibliomaniac Society; David Lisot, executive producer of CoinWeek.com, and Steve Roach, editor-at-large of Coin World.

At 7:30 Thursday evening, the NLG will stage its Bash, an eagerly awaited high point of ANA conventions for nearly half a century. It will take place in Grand Ballroom A&B on the entry level of the Hyatt Regency O’Hare, the main convention hotel.

As usual, the Bash will feature a smorgasbord of food, fun and richly deserved recognition. The program will begin with a sumptuous hot buffet, and that will be followed by skits and satirical songs and the presentation of award plaques to winners in the Guild’s yearly Writer’s Competition.

The 2015 Bash will include a special segment paying tribute to Margo Russell, longtime editor of Coin World, who died earlier this year, on Jan. 26, at the age of 95. Margo was a charter member of the NLG and a regular participant in musical numbers performed at Bashes for many years by a group of prominent women who billed themselves as The Girls.

Joe Boling, who emceed last year’s Bash, will serve in that role again this year, with able support from NLG stalwarts Carlton “Fred” Schwan and Scott Travers. Boling and Schwan made their debuts as Bash ringmasters in 2014.

Tickets to the Bash cost just $10 apiece and attendance is open to all. Membership in the Guild is not a requirement. Tickets can be purchased beforehand from Maurice Rosen, R.W. “Bob” Julian and Scott Travers or at the ballroom entrance just before the Bash.

The evening’s climactic highlight will be the presentation of the Clemy, the Guild’s highest honor, which is awarded each year to someone who combines exceptional communication skills with dedication to the NLG’s mission of good fellowship and a well-honed sense of humor.
