Rare Coin Social Media Groups Explode in Popularity

Roundtable Group - Coin Dealers Helping Coin Dealers

Only 21 months ago Rob Oberth from Marietta, Georgia launched Coin Dealers Helping Coins Dealers (CDHCD) as a private Facebook group devoted to the wholesale trading of rare coins, and other numismatic material. As the name implies, the group was created to bring dealers together to share ideas about the challenges and opportunities of the modern rare coin market. In a very short time, CDHCD has grown to include over 900 participating members. Another 300 dealers have joined the RoundTable, a new and innovative trading platform. More importantly, however, it is a new association of coin dealers.

Oberth states: “CDHCD and Roundtable has seen an explosion of activity, with tens of millions of dollars having traded hands in recent months among the private groups.” Membership continues to grow at a rapid pace each month.

The new association has harnessed the incredible power of social media for the advancement of numismatics. The CDHCD and RoundTable private groups provide a nearly 24-hour platform for numismatic trading. Numismatic trading is much more personal and interactive than on traditional online trading sites.

In recent weeks, Jeff Garrett, a highly respected rare coin dealer from Lexington, Kentucky has become a partner in the new venture. Also joining the team is Maxwell Gregory, one of the brightest young coin dealers in the country. Their individual skills and contacts will be utilized to continue the stratospheric growth of the platforms going forward.

Social media has also been an incredible way to attract more young participants to numismatics. The future of our hobby spends an incredible amount of time on their mobile devices. The CDHCD and RoundTable groups are teaming with young people eager to trade rare coins on their phones.

Gregory states: “Bargains on CDHCD and Roundtable are usually snapped up in seconds by one of these young players. Anyone who thinks that there is a shortage of young people in the coin business only needs to become a member of RoundTable to have their mind changed!”

Most material posted is intended for quick sale at current market levels. This provides dealers around the country a source of new material. For dealers selling, they now have hundreds of customers competing aggressively for fresh numismatic material entering the market. Most of the major national dealers are members of RoundTable. In recent months, several CDHCD auctions have resulted in record prices; an uncertified, and recently discovered 1859 Half Eagle sold for $50,000 USD in frenzied bidding. Many five- and six-figure coins trade regularly at prices exceeding those realized at major auctions.

The incredible growth and popularity of CDHCD and RoundTable has also led to the creation multiple retail-oriented private Facebook groups:

The Virtual Coin Show allows collectors to buy, sell, and to seek advice from RoundTable-authorized members. To date, the group has over 3,500 members participating. The daily volume of sales continues to grow each week.

Silver Stackers RT has been created for those with strong interest in buying silver bullion. The term “Silver Stackers” was coined in recent years for those who like to buy small amounts of silver each month, and believe in the long-term investment potential of the precious metal.

The Vault is similar to Virtual Coin Show, with many different participants actively buying and selling numismatic material.

Garrett states that “The revolution these numismatic trading sites have created will be truly disruptive for the rare coin market. Currently, there are no insertion fees, final value fees or commissions. The costs of buying and selling numismatic material has been substantially lowered for all participants. I am proud and excited to be part of the something so transformative for our hobby.”

Although individual due diligence is always recommended, the groups are monitored by our highly respected moderator team who are concerned about the long-term reputation and integrity of the platforms. Dealer members are thoroughly evaluated, with the power of social media being an important tool in identifying unworthy applicants. Moderators are reachable and taggable in the event of problems or disputes.

Oberth summarizes by stating “We invite everyone to become a part of the next REVOLUTION in coin and currency trading by becoming a part of the RoundTable family.”

Dealers may contact Rob Oberth at [email protected] for more information on how to join. Collectors should search for Virtual Coin Show on Facebook.
